Major Achievements
- We achieved and exceeded our Academic Performance Index (API) goal for 2007–2008, and our students made growth in both language arts and math on the California Standards Tests (CST).
- We are committed to the academic improvement of our students’ performance in both language arts and mathematics.
- Our students participated in a variety of activities throughout the school year, such as celebrations for both Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez, the District Science Fair, Spelling Bee, and Theater of Hearts. Classroom teachers schedule exciting field trips to enhance the students’ learning experiences.
- Our seventh grade students attended an Ocean Safety field trip that included CPR training, as well as, kayaking and boogie board lessons.
- Eighth grade students participate in promotion activities to celebrate the culmination of their educational experiences at La Tijera School.
- Our PTA continues to support various school activities and programs such as our choir and Debutantes and Gents. These programs allow our students to experience a variety of events and community service opportunities.
Focus for Improvement
- La Tijera’s staff member continue to administer the district’s math and language arts assessments to monitor our students’ academic growth and prepare students for the CST. Our focus was improvement in, mathematics. Math intervention classes were scheduled during the school day to provide added support for students needing extra support in math.
- Teachers will implement research-based instructional strategies to improve students’ reading fluency, reading comprehension, English language development, and math.
- During the 2008–2009 school year, we will be implementing a physician’s mentoring program for students in the seventh and eighth grades that have an interest in becoming doctors.
- We are also planning educational field trips to Washington D.C. and San Diego to expand our students’ educational experiences beyond our school’s campus environment.
